What do you do when you’re super craving a mocha but don’t want to change out of your pajamas and go out to get one? Make it yourself! Whether you use drip coffee or instant coffee, homemade mocha is quicker than changing out of your clothes and going out to buy it. Better yet, put down your wallet and follow these steps to make it!
Using Drip Coffee
1 Prepare the ingredients
You will need these to make a mocha using drip coffee:
- 250g of filter coffee
- Half a cup of milk
- 1 tablespoon (15g) cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon (15g) warm water
- Sugar (optional)
- Whipped cream and cocoa (for topping, optional)
2 Brew as much coffee as you want
It’s best to use authentic, high-bodied, dark-roasted coffee. If you don’t have it, you can use instant coffee, but drip coffee tastes much better than instant.
- 4 tablespoons of ground coffee with 170 ml of water and above is called high strength.
3 Make chocolate syrup with warm water and sweetened cocoa powder
Mix the same proportions of water and cocoa powder in a small bowl. You will need 2 tablespoons (30g) per cup of mocha.
4 Mix chocolate syrup and coffee in a mug
Add coffee and syrup in equal proportions. Don’t pour it all over, leave some room for the milk.
5 Heat the milk on the stove or in the microwave
Depending on the size of your mug, you will need 1/3-1/2 cup of milk.
- The best temperature for milk is 60-70 degrees Celsius. It does not taste good at higher temperatures.
6 Fill mug with hot milk
If you have milk froth, add it slowly to the mocha with a spoon.
- If you like it sweet, add 1 teaspoon of sugar before adding the milk froth.
7 Garnish the top with whipped cream, sprinkle some cocoa powder and enjoy
Chocolate syrup, caramel syrup, cinnamon sugar or granulated sugar are also good.
Use espresso
1 Prepare the ingredients
You will need these to make a mocha using espresso:
- Espresso (regular or decaffeinated)
- 2 tablespoons (30g) hot water
- 1 tablespoon (15g) unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon (15g) sugar
- A pinch of salt
- Half a cup of milk (any kind)
- 1 tablespoon flavored syrup (optional)
2 Mix hot water, cocoa powder, sugar and salt in a mug
It’s a pretty classic flavor you can taste at a coffee shop, and it’s much tastier than your average coffee mate. That’s for the kids.
3 Make some espresso
You need half a mug’s worth. If you want to reduce your caffeine intake, use half decaffeinated coffee or reduce the amount of coffee beans.
4 Heat half a mug of milk
If you don’t have a steamer, you can add the milk directly to the coffee and heat it in the microwave, or in the oven at 70 degrees Celsius. It would be convenient if you have a coffee maker.
- Keep an eye on the temperature when heating. Don’t overcook it. Heat it for about 15 seconds to about 70 degrees Celsius and you’re done.
- If you have a big mug, you may need 3/4 cup of milk.
5 Add the hot milk to the chocolate syrup
Once the milk and chocolate are well mixed, use a spoon to let the milk froth float to the top.
Add all the milk and let the milk froth float to the surface.
6 Add the milk and syrup mixture to the coffee and the mocha is ready
If you have a favored syrup (caramel or berry), add it at this point.
7 Topped with whipped cream and cocoa powder
Not only is it delicious, it also looks well. You can also top with caramel, cinnamon or granulated sugar. Colored sugar sprinkles and cherries will also work. Enjoy!
