Do you like to innovate with food? Try making some meatloaf. This recipe is really simple and there are so many things you can add to it, dinner will never be the same again! This recipe serves 6 people.
Ingredients
- 1.5 pounds of ground beef
- 3 slices of white bread, torn into small pieces or 1 cup of bread crumbs (or crackers or oatmeal)
- A cup of tomato juice or milk
- 1/2 cup chopped onions
- an egg, broken
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
Make the Most Basic Meatloaf
Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius. It is best to preheat the oven, because then you can use the oven directly after mixing the ingredients, which saves a lot of time.
- This temperature is equivalent to 175 degrees Celsius.
Mix bread, onions, salt and pepper. These bread slices (or bread crumbs, crackers, or oatmeal) act as glue to ensure the patties stick together. So the bread needs to be shredded.
- If you’re using oatmeal, it’s a good idea to use a food processor to grind it into very small pieces so it can act as a better glue. But it’s not necessary, so even if you can’t grate it, you can still make a delicious patty (it will be crispier).
Crack the eggs into another bowl. It’s best to do this so that if you get some eggshell in the egg, it will be easier to clean. You can then add the eggs to the ground beef mixture.
Mix beef, tomato juice and eggs. You can add more ingredients to make them blend better, but not too much. Be gentle when handling the meat, otherwise it will become tough and no one likes tough beef.
Add bread mixture to beef mixture. It’s best to use your hands as you will need to work the mixture into the roulade form. Again, be gentle and don’t mix too much as you need all the ingredients mixed.
Shape the meat filling into a loaf in a baking dish. It’s best to use a cookie sheet without sides rather than a loaf tin so the fat in the rolls can drain out. If you use a loaf pan, the rolls will be very greasy.
- On a baking sheet, shape the mincemeat into the shape of a loaf of bread (like you would in a bread mold).
Bake for an hour and a half, or until the burritos are cooked through.
Remove the dish from the oven and grease again. Let it cool for a while beforehand (you can line it with foil). This method makes cutting the rolls easier and keeps them from getting all over the place when you eat them.
Serve your meal and enjoy! You can serve it with mashed potatoes, roasted cauliflower, and a fresh salad. As long as you want, you can do whatever you want!
Make Creative Barbecue Rolls
Add some unusual fillings to your meatloaf. Try mixing in potato flakes, peppers, mushrooms, celery, beans, carrots, and more. You want to make sure they are all cut up, either by hand or with a food processor.
Add cheese. You can add cheese to the meatloaf filling or the surface. You can even lay out the meatloaf on a non-stick surface, brush a layer of cheese in the center of the meatloaf, and roll it up. This way there will be a layer of cheese inside the meatloaf.
- Try mixing dry cheese with peppered cheese for a unique flavor.
- If you like a smoky flavor, try blue cheese.
Make a layer of glaze for the top. Bake the burrito for ten minutes before adding this. There are many types of glazes you can make, from as simple as brushing a spicy chili sauce on top to something more complex.
- One version is to combine ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, honey, cumin seeds, and a splash of Tabasco sauce and brush it over the top of the burrito. If you use it on the most basic kind of burrito, it will also make the burrito more delicious.
Season to taste. Add fresh or dried herbs to the mixture, or add red pepper and garlic. Try different herb and spice combinations to see which one you like best. Adding more cayenne pepper will make the flavor stronger, and you can also add some rosemary.
Try different meats. You can try adding different types of meat to your ground beef to vary the meat content and flavor. Just substitute half of the ground beef with whichever meat you like.
- A more adventurous approach is to add pepperoni to the beef.
- Adding minced pork can increase the meat content and make the meatloaf taste better.
Tips
- Instead of adding onion powder, add some fresh chopped white onions to the meatloaf.
- To make the meatloaf taste even better, break up the toast and add it to the mixture.
- If you want the meatloaf to be juicy and not dry, you can add half a cup of vegetable juice, chicken stock, or tomato juice to it. You can also soak the bread crumbs in milk beforehand. Do not use soy milk, otherwise it will taste very unpleasant.
- You can use any kind of cookie. I like the garlic flavor.
- Unsweetened rolled oats can be used in place of the bread crumbs.
